My Review:

This book gets an "A" from me for the Christmas cookie and dessert recipes alone! Each cookie recipe looks more delicious than the previous one! The Eggnog Cookies are a must-try for me, as well as the Cherry Cheesecake Cookies. And the Santa Claus Cookies are just too cute not to try! Some of the cookies and treats even use boxed cake mixes to cut down on time in the kitchen. I know some readers aren't that keen on the pre-processed mixes, but all of the recipes aren't from boxes, there is a good mix of different types of recipes. One refreshing thing about all of the recipes in the book is the small list of ingredients for each item. Yay! I don't have to buy a ton of things I won't use again or haven't even heard of before!

To me, the stars of the book are the recipes. The tips for the Christmas season are fun, especially the 12 Days of Christmas for Your True Love, where the Sisters give tips on how to modernize the classic 12 Days of Christmas. For instance, a dozen donuts on the 12th day. Too cute! However some of the other holiday decorating and sanity saving tips are bit repetitive of others that I have seen on blogs and in magazines. The tips are still fun, but the real gems are the easy recipes and the delicious looking full page photos of the food! Yum!

Bottom Line: This is another great installment of the books by the Six Sisters, I can't wait to try many of the Christmas cookie recipes!

"A Year with Six Sisters' Stuff" Review and Tour Wide Giveaway

"A Year with Six Sisters' Stuff: 52 Menu Plans, Recipes, and Ideas to Bring Families Together"
by Six Sisters' Stuff

Publisher: Shadow Mountain

Release Date: March 25, 2014
Source: sent by publisher

My Rating: 5 of 5 Stars

Summary from goodreads.com:

What's for dinner?" Three words every mom dreads.
Don't panic! The Six Sisters are here to help you answer that question. The Sisters have gathered together more than 150 of their most popular recipes for entrees, side dishes, and desserts and have combined them into 52 stress-free menus of perfectly prepared three-course meals.
Filled with delicious tried-and-true family favorites and oh-so-easy-to-make dishes, A Year with Six Sisters' Stuff features all-new recipes using basic ingredients you probably already have in your kitchen. Each menu is designed to make your dinner plans as easy as possible—and with such wide variety and a photograph accompanying every recipe in the book, you can easily mix and match menus to create a year's worth of dinner ideas.
In addition, the Sisters share some of their favorite family dinner traditions and crafts, as well as 52 dinner conversation starters, a list of pantry staples, and, food storage plan for beginners.
So what's for dinner? Whatever you'd like.

My Review:

Wow, there a LOT of recipes in this book! And the best part about all of them is how easy they seem to cook! Another thing that I love about all the recipes is that the sisters use ingredients that are actually familiar. If they aren't already in our pantry, they are easy to buy at at the store. No scratching my head and saying, "Now where would I find that?" or even worse, "What is that?" All of these dishes are made with everyday ingredients, and usually only a handful of ingredients, not a whole shopping list-yay!

As I mentioned, there are really a lot of recipes in this book. There are 52 menu plans, each plan has a main dish, a side dish, and a dessert. That's over 150 yummy, do-able recipes! There are so many that I just can't wait to try! The Crispy Onion Chicken gives you the similar texture and flavor of chicken nuggets or fried chicken, but without frying! I may try the Crunchy Black Bean Tacos later this week, they sound delicious! The Cheddar Cheese Biscuits are another recipe that I know I will try soon. They look similar to the ones that are pretty famous at a certain seafood restaurant, and I can't believe how EASY they look to make!

Many of the recipes involve a slow-cooker, which I am not that comfortable with yet, but it does seem like a really easy way to make dinner. Slow-cooker fans will really love this book, but don't worry, there are plenty of other recipes that don't use a slow-cooker too.

The family dinner ideas are short and sweet, and are a nice little addition to the recipes. My favorite idea is the "Crazy Dinner" Tradition, where the kids get to pick the dishes, with no restrictions! How fun!

Bottom Line: This is a great addition to any cookbook collection. The recipes seem amazingly simple and look delicious too!

"Six Sisters' Stuff: Family Recipes, Fun Crafts, and So Much More"
 by Six Sisters' Stuff

Publisher: Shadow Mountain
Release Date: Mar 4, 2013
Source: sent by publicist/publisher

My Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Summary from goodreads.com:

Cook, craft, and create with recipes, projects, and ideas from the blog SixSistersStuff.com. Camille, Kristen, Elyse, Stephanie, Lauren, and Kendra are six sisters who share their easy, affordable recipes and crafts in this collection of family favorites. These pages contain more than 90 tried-and-true recipes that use ingredients commonly found in your pantry, with easy-to-follow instructions and photographs of each dish. Charming do-it-yourself projects, such as stained Mason Jars and a Ruffles and Yarn Wreath, are fun to create and require little time or money. Suggestions for indoor activities for kids, healthy snack ideas, or an inexpensive night out are among the many lists included in the book.

My Review:

Wow, these recipes really do sound easy! I think I can do this! I've read some cookbooks that have me scratching my head and saying, "What is that?" about certain ingredients. But these recipes use ingredients that I have actually heard of and possibly even already have!

The main dishes portion of the book does use a lot of ground beef, which isn't something I eat much of. But as I was reading through the recipes, a lot of them sound like they would still be great even if the beef were omitted entirely, or if  a substitute were used.

The side dishes and desserts parts of the book were the best part for me. I love that the sisters give us healthy ingredients without going overboard or being unrealistic. There were some skinny cupcakes that just sounded delicious! And 7-Up seems to be a secret ingredient in a lot of their recipes! I can't wait to try it out.

The photos were beautiful, and there is a large photo of each recipe-yay! A lot of readers want to see what they are going to make, isn't that half the fun of a cookbook?

The extra stuff like the crafts and the to-do lists were more of a bonus or a background detail for me. The real stars of the book are the recipes!

Bottom Line: This cookbook is definitely a keeper, with beautiful photos and recipes so easy that I want to try them all!

Giveaway, Review, and Recipes from "Jamie Oliver's Great Britain" Cookbook

"Jamie Oliver's Great Britain"
by Jamie Oliver

Publisher: Hyperion
Release Date: Oct 2, 2012 (reprint)
Source: sent by publicist

My Rating: 5 of 5 Stars

Partial Summary from goodreads.com:
Having grown up in his parents' gastropub, Jamie Oliver has always had a special place in his heart for British cooking. And in recent years there's been an exciting revolution in the British food world in general. English chefs, producers, and artisans are retracing old recipes, rediscovering quality ingredients, and focusing on simplicity and quality. Jamie celebrates the best of the old and new (including classic British immigrant food) in his first cookbook focused on England.

Here are over 130 great, easy-to-prepare recipes, ranging from salads--Heavenly Salmon and Epic Roast Chicken; to puddings--Rhubarb and Rice Pudding and Citrus Cheesecake Pots; to Sunday lunch--Guinness Lamb Shanks and Roast Quail Skewers; and, of course, the crumbliest scones. America has already fallen for the new British gastropub cooking, with popular restaurants by chefs such as April Bloomfield of The Spotted Pig and the John Dory. Now Jamie shows how to make the same delicious food at home. This is definitely not your grandmother's mushy peas!

My Review:

Readers of my blog know that I am a huge fan of Jamie Oliver (as shown here), so I was thrilled to have the opportunity to review this cookbook. Many people caught "Britain fever" this summer due to the Olympics in London, and this cookbook is released at a time when the world is really interested in knowing more about the country and it's culture. This book honestly has some of the best looking recipes in any of Jamie's books yet, and that's saying something because I love all of this cookbooks!

The book is oversized, and at 416 pages, it is absolutely full of recipes, photos, and details of Jamie's trip around Britain looking for the best recipes and inspiration in the country. The gorgeous photos, are not just of the food, but also of Jamie's adventures around Britain. In a graphic style, almost like a scrapbook, he shares the people, culture, and the beautiful sights that he found along the way. I want to visit all of these places, he makes them look so inviting and beautiful.

Every recipe in the book has a heartfelt intro by Jamie, these alone will make you want to try the recipes no matter what the ingredients are! With recipes like "ER's Diamond Jubilee Chicken" (an upgrade on Coronation Chicken), and "Kate and Will's Wedding Pie" (a meat pie), I am willing to try the more traditional British dishes that I haven't been so sure about before.

There is an entire section of the book for "Afternoon Tea." Does anything get any more British than Tea Time? The recipes here sound delicious, and almost dessert-like, including "Sour Cranberry Bakewell" and "My Nan's St. Clement's Cake."

Bottom Line: Not only do I love all the recipes, and want to try them all, but I thoroughly enjoyed reading about Jamie Oliver's adventures in Britain with it's uniquely British people and culture.

Roasted Apple & Squash Soup
By Jamie Oliver

On my travels around Bristol I spent an afternoon with Leona, who runs the Boiling Wells cafe in the allotment gardens. She’s a lovely young lady and a real food activist in many ways. What’s more, she’s a great cook, and I’d rather eat food made by a great cook than a great chef any day of the week. The food she makes is clearly a reaction to the wonderful ingredients she gets from the allotments, which are a stone’s throw from her cafe. She knocked out this soup for me, which I’ve tweaked slightly. I genuinely love it.
SERVES 4 TO 6

butternut squash (roughly 2 lbs)

3 good eating apples, such as Braeburn

1 large onion

1 or 2 fresh red chiles

4 cloves of garlic, unpeeled and bashed

olive oil

sea salt and ground pepper

a pinch of coriander seeds

a few sprigs of fresh rosemary, leaves picked and finely chopped

3 heaped tablespoons pumpkin seeds

a pinch of cayenne pepper

3 ¼ cups organic vegetable or chicken stock

⅔ cup light cream

optional: edible flowers or flowering herbs, to serve

Preheat the oven to 400°F. Very carefully(!) peel and slice the squash lengthways and scoop out the seeds. Cut into 1-inch chunks and put them on a large baking sheet. To see how to safely cut up butternut squash, go to www.jamieoliver.com/how-to.

Peel the apples, then quarter them and remove the core. Peel and roughly chop the onion and add the apples and onion to the baking sheet. Halve and deseed the chiles and add to the sheet with the unpeeled and bashed garlic cloves. Drizzle over a good amount of olive oil and add a good pinch of salt and pepper – I also like to add a pinch of coriander seeds and a little chopped rosemary because I think it brings out the best flavor. Toss everything together so all the veg is nicely coated, season one more time, then whack into the oven and cook for around 45 minutes, or until everything is cooked through, intensely golden and delicious.

Toss the pumpkin seeds with salt, pepper, olive oil and the cayenne. Spread on a baking sheet and roast in the oven for 10 to 15 minutes until nice and toasted, then put aside for later.

Put some of the roasted veg into a blender, making sure you squeeze the garlic flesh out of its skin first. Add a swig of stock, then place a tea towel over the lid and gently blitz until smooth and lovely. Put this into a large pan while you blitz the rest. Pour in most of the cream and bring to a simmer over a medium to low heat. Have a taste, season to perfection and either add another splash of stock, or carry on simmering until you’ve got it to the consistency you love.

To serve, divide between warm soup bowls and add an 80s swirl of cream and a sprinkling of
toasted seeds. If you’re as creative as Leona, you can also grab some flowering herbs or edible
flowers to sprinkle over the top and make it extra beautiful. Serve with warm crusty bread.

Empire Roast Chicken
By Jamie Oliver

EMPIRE ROAST CHICKEN
BOMBAY ROASTIES | AMAZING INDIAN GRAVY

Ask any British person what their two favorite meals are and I reckon most people would say their mum’s roast chicken, and a curry. Well, welcome to Empire roast chicken, a combination of both of those things. Your friends and family are going to love it. I love it. You will love it.

Slash the chicken’s legs a few times right down to the bone. Get a baking sheet slightly bigger than the chicken, then add all of the marinade ingredients and mix together well. Put on a pair of clean rubber gloves, then really massage those flavors over and inside the chicken so it’s smeared everywhere. Don’t be shy! Ideally marinate overnight in the fridge.

Preheat the oven to 400°F and organize the oven rack so the baking sheet can sit right at the bottom, the chicken can sit directly above it, right on the rack, and the potatoes can go at the top. Halve any larger potatoes, then parboil them in a large pan of salted boiling water with a whole lemon for about 15 to 20 minutes, or until the potatoes are cooked through. Drain the potatoes then let them steam dry. Stab the lemon a few times with a sharp knife and put it right into the chicken’s cavity. Move the chicken to a plate.

Roughly chop the onions and add to the baking sheet along with the cinnamon stick, cloves, vinegar and Worcestershire sauce, then whisk in the flour. Pour in the stock or water, then place this right at the bottom of the oven. Place the chicken straight on to the bars of the middle shelf, above the baking sheet. Cook for 1 hour 20 minutes.

Put another sturdy baking sheet over a medium heat and add the olive oil, a knob of butter, the mustard and cumin seeds, garam masala and turmeric – work quickly because if the fat gets too hot the mustard seeds will pop everywhere. Halve a bulb of garlic and add it straight to the pan, with the sliced chile and chopped tomatoes. Add your drained potatoes to the tray, mix everything together, then season well. Finely slice and scatter in the cilantro stalks, and keep the leaves in a bowl of water for later. After the chicken has been in for 40 minutes, put the potatoes in.

Once the chicken is cooked, move it to a board and carefully peel off the dark charred bits to reveal perfect chicken underneath. Pass the gravy through a coarse sieve into a pan, whisking any sticky goodness from the pan as you go. Bring to the boil and either cook and thicken or thin down with water to your preference. Put it into a serving bowl and drizzle over a little yogurt. Get your potatoes out of the oven and put them into a serving bowl, then serve the chicken on a board next to the sizzling roasties and hot gravy. Sprinkle the reserved cilantro leaves over everything and serve with any condiments you like. Life doesn’t get much better.

SERVES 4-6

For the chicken and marinade

2 ¼ lb preferably higher welfare chicken

1 heaped tablespoon each finely grated garlic, fresh ginger and fresh red chile
1 heaped tablespoon tomato puree

1 heaped teaspoon each of ground coriander, turmeric, garam masala and ground cumin

2 heaped teaspoons plain yogurt

2 lemons

2 teaspoons sea salt

For the gravy

3 small red onions, peeled

1 stick of cinnamon

10 cloves

3 tablespoons each of white wine vinegar and Worcestershire sauce

3 tablespoons all-purpose flour

2 cups organic chicken stock

optional: plain yogurt, to serve

For the Bombay-style potatoes

1 ¾  lbs new potatoes

sea salt and ground pepper

1 lemon

2 or 3 tablespoons olive oil

a knob of butter

1 heaped teaspoon each of black mustard seeds, cumin seeds, garam masala and turmeric

1 bulb of garlic

1 fresh red chile, deseeded and finely sliced

2 tomatoes, roughly chopped

1 small bunch of fresh cilantro

"Cornelia Guest's Simple Pleasures" Review and Recipe

"Cornelia Guest's Simple Pleasures"
by Cornelia Guest

Publisher: Weinstein
Release Date: June 12, 2012
Source: sent by publicist

My Rating: 4 of 5 Stars

Partial Summary from goodreads.com:
Daughter of fashion icon C. Z. Guest and Winston Frederick Churchill Guest, polo champion and heir to the Phipps steel fortune, Cornelia Guest resisted eating animal products from childhood because of her passion for critters.” When her mother became ill, her research compelled her to take the leap to eat cruelty-free. In Cornelia Guest’s Simple Pleasures, she reveals the secrets of understated elegance she learned from her parents and the family’s extraordinary friends. Her favorite simple recipes are so delicious, even the most fervent carnivores do not miss the meat, and her tips on entertaining take the stress out of any event. Her ulterior motive is to inspire readers to have fun experimenting with healthy alternatives and to change the way they think about food.

My Review:

This cookbook, and entertaining guide, is really so nicely done. It is a beautiful book, with a gorgeous teal hardcover and beautiful photos and drawings inside. The photos are really inspiring and lovely to look at. The recipes themselves are vegan, so they may not be for everyone but I think anyone could find at least a side dish or breakfast item that they would enjoy making and eating.

The first half of the book is devoted to entertaining, something I don't do that often, so I really enjoyed the cooking portion of the book more. The author's style of entertaining is on the frou frou side so take that into consideration before reading the book. Even if her tastes for entertaining may be fussy, the photos are still beautiful to look at, and she shares the history of her family's home and it's nice to read about all of that history as well.

I loved the tiny sketches of little animals throughout the book, they are just too cute. I also loved that the author let her adorable pets model with the food for some of the photos. The book really is beautiful, and it would make a lovely and lasting gift for a vegan friend.

I want to try a lot of the recipes, they don't look too difficult and they are all made with fresh seasonal ingredients. The recipe portion of the book is split into the four seasons and consists of recipes and foods that pertain to that time of year. One of my favorite parts was the fall breakfast section. There are a lot of new things I want to try!

I liked that the author added basic instructions for cooking some vegan staples like grains and beans. It's helpful to have a list of cooking times and instructions for many grains and beans at a glance.

Bottom Line: A beautifully made book with lots of inspiration for cooking, entertaining, and even decorating.

 Bonus Recipe from the Book!

The publicist has given me permission to post two recipes from the book on my blog to celebrate the release of the book! I shared the Grilled Corn and Avocado Salad a few weeks back and today I'll feature Zucchini Blossoms Stuffed with Amaranth! Enjoy!!

Zucchini Blossoms Stuffed with Amaranth
By Cornelia Guest,

Author of Cornelia Guest's Simple Pleasures: Healthy Seasonal Cooking and Easy Entertaining
Serves 4
Total time: 45 minutes
Zucchini blossoms are so beautiful. This is so easy to make, and your friends will be very impressed. You can make the stuffing the day before so you can enjoy your friends, stuff the blossoms and have a great lunch. Amaranth is a gooey grain that works well as a stuffing. I serve this dish with iced tea with mint or a crisp white wine. Fresh tomatoes go well with the squash blossoms.
3 cups amaranth
1 medium onion
3 tablespoons olive oil, divided
2 zucchini
1 small eggplant (you want to end up with 1-1/2 cups after its is cooked)
1 garlic clove
4 large blossoms per serving
1 tablespoon finely chopped parsley
1. Bring 3 cups of water to a boil and add amaranth. Simmer and cook until water is absorbed, approximately 20 to 25 minutes.
2. Quarter the onion and cook in 1 tablespoon olive oil for 30 minutes over medium heat until caramelized.
3. Dice zucchini and sauté in 1 tablespoon olive oil until soft, approximately 5 to 7 minutes.
4. Dice eggplant and garlic and sauté in 1 tablespoon olive oil for 10 minutes.
5. Mix the cooked vegetables with the amaranth and add parsley. Fill the squash blossoms with the mixture. Serve at room temperature.

"Farm Fresh Southern Cooking" Review

"Farm Fresh Southern Cooking"
by Tammy Algood

Publisher: Thomas Nelson
Release Date: April 17, 2012

Source: sent by publisher

My Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

Summary from goodreads.com:

Is there anything better than a kitchen countertop spread with the spoils of a Saturday morning at the farmers' market? Every trip yields some new assortment of old favorites and newfound treasures. One week, you're tempted by the sun-warmed heirloom tomatoes and the Mason jars brimming with orange blossom honey. Another week, it's the slabs of milky Havarti cheese and the Red Haven peaches heavy with juice, enticing you to spend just a little more than you planned. Kentucky pole beans, silky ears of sweet corn, and sacks of stone-ground buckwheat flour may find their way into your basket on another visit.

Whether you shop with a list or purely on impulse, you'll always find the truest taste of home at the local farms, roadside stands, and produce markets in your community. These are the places that offer up the native flavors of the South and all its seasons. They are your portal to the fields, the waters, and the vines where your food is cultivated. Get to know the origins of what you eat and the people who produce it. Tammy Algood's Farm Fresh Southern Cooking celebrates this experience with delicious recipes that will enhance the natural flavors of your latest market haul and stories of the South's most dedicated growers and culinary producers.
My Review:

This is a beautiful cookbook with so many new recipes to try, along with inspiring stories of locally owned farms around the southern states. The book cover and pages have a rustic look and feel, with a matte finish instead of glossy pages. It makes the book have more of a homespun feeling, even though sometimes the gorgeous photos do lose some of their luster.

My favorite thing about the cookbook was reading about all the locally owned farms and farmers markets that the author likes to visit. I'm glad there are web links too, because I really want to visit all of these places! It also encouraged me to seek out working farms near me where I can buy produce locally.

Since I love vegetarian dishes, I was excited to see so very many side dishes prepared with seasonal veggies. Some are snacks for sure, like the Fresh Peach Salsa that I can't wait to try. Others, like the casseroles, I feel could be served as the main dish for almost-vegetarians like me. There's a huge variety of different produce used in new ways I hadn't seen before.

Bottom Line: Overall, a wonderful addition to your cookbook collection, with varied and new recipes to try with locally available food.

"5 Ingredient Fix" by Claire Robinson

"5 Ingredient Fix: Easy, Elegant and Irresistible Recipes"
by Claire Robinson

Publisher: Grand Central Life & Style
Release Date: Oct 27, 2010

Source: sent by publisher

My Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Summary from goodreads.com:

Food Network regular will instant recognize the concept behind this book: As the host of the channel's 5 Ingredient Fix, author Claire Robinson presents easy-to-make recipes with no more than five ingredients. Like the show, her debut cookbook demonstrates that this guideline is no harsh limitation. In fact, her recipes for dishes like Maple-Candied Bacon, Grilled Scallops with Saffron Aioli, and Brioche French Toast with Strawberries and Cream show that her penchant for fresh ingredients and distinctive flavors turn simple fare into delectable feasts. Especially appealing for kitchen newbies, but a fine resource for any home cook.

My review:

This is a beautiful cookbook with some really upscale recipes that have only five ingredients or less. Robinson's philosophy is that the more ingredients you add to a recipe, the farther away you get from the true flavor. Of course, the five ingredients that you do use need to be very high quality. While the recipes seem uncomplicated to prepare (yay!), they also seem like your grocery bill would be pretty high (boo!)

I loved that this book had sections on hors d'oeuvres, cocktails, and appetizers. I can really see how people would use this book to host elegant parties. It seems like a lot of books skip over these types of recipes, so I'm glad to see the options here.

I also thought the chapter on "All Day Eats" was unique and useful to me because I love snacks! The Fennel, Strawberry, and Arugula Salad" looks delicious, as do many of the other salads and snacks.

As for the main dishes, they weren't really anything I would try, for example-a whole chicken, but the side dishes looked really good. I'd love to try the "Smokey Roasted Peaches."

Bottom Line: This book is beautifully presented and would make a lovely gift. I think it would be especially great for a hostess who throws a lot of elegant parties.

Healthy Habits (1) Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution

I've been thinking a lot about living a healthier lifestyle lately, and I wanted to incorporate the things I've found into my blog posts! So today I'm making my first "Healthy Habits" post, which I hope will become a weekly post for me! I don't want the posts to be about dieting or exercising obsessively, I want them to be an inspiration to be healthy!!

Today's Healthy Habits post focuses on "Jamie Oliver's Food Revolution." For those of you who haven't seen Jamie's show on ABC (Fridays at 9!), he's trying to change the American way of eating, (you know processed foods that are basically just chemicals and other junk that have no business in our bodies) and focus on fresh, healthy foods, as well as cooking as a way of life and something to share with family and friends!

Jamie has set up an online petition that is focusing on getting better foods in kids' school lunch programs, as well as keeping cooking skills alive. Go ahead and sign the petition, it only takes a few seconds, and its a start to a healthier way of life. Over 430,000 Americans have signed so far!

Don't forget about Jamie's Food Revolution Cookbook, I can't wait to get this one and start cooking some of the healthy meals.
