5 copies of "Tempted by a Warrior"!!

"Shut Up and Kiss Me" Review

"Shut Up and Kiss Me"
by Christie Craig

Source: sent by publisher in exchange for review

My Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

My Review:

Shala Winters is a photographer hired by the mayor of Precious, TX to raise tourism for their town. Her first photography event is a pow wow ceremony presented by the Chitiwa tribe. Shala had no idea that no pictures are allowed by the tribe. She respects their rules and doesn't take any photos but she refuses to leave her expensive equipment unattended. Police Chief, Sky Gomez, confiscates her camera, in full ceremonial dress, no less. As Shala tries her best to explain what happened, Sky keeps the camera until he finds out more. Soon they realize that someone is after the photos on the camera and Shala. Whoever seeks her is desperate enough to kill. Shala has no choice but to stay in Precious with Sky and his lovably dysfunctional family until she is out of danger.

I am not usually a fan of contemporary romance, but I was drawn in by the Native American characters, not to mention that this was a "Guaranteed Read!" I am so glad I stepped out of the box to read this book because I loved it!! Christie Craig has written a story with a bit of everything- edge of your seat plot, a full cast of supporting characters, humor, and of course, a believable romance between two great leads.

Shala was a great mix of strong and vulnerable. Sky was believable as someone who always wanted to do the right thing, but it didn't always happen that way.

Sky's foster brother, Jose, was hilarious. Poor Jose as constantly getting a pie in the face, reminding him of why he left Precious. I can honestly say, I could never tell where his relationship with Maria was headed.

This author really knows how to create a cliffhanger at the end of a chapter! And there were so many stories going on at once, you have to wait a while to see what happens every time there's a cliffhanger! Her writing style really keeps the pages turning.

Part of why I read this was to read about the modern Native American culture and I wasn't disappointed. I liked the modern (Jose) vs. traditional (Sky and Jose's father, Redfoot) viewpoints.

Main Characters: 5/5
Supporting Characters: 5/5

Setting: 4/5

Romance: 4/5

Uniqueness: 5/5
Cover: 3/5 (could be better, but I love the pic of Sky's dog/wolf on the back with the camera-perfect representation of the story)
Writing: 5/5

Bottom Line: This book has it all and I was drawn in from page one. I'll definitely be looking forward to more from this author.

"Sand in My Eyes" Review

"Sand in My Eyes"
by Christine Lemmon

Source: sent for review by BlogSparksPR and the author

My Rating: 2.5 out of 5 stars

Book Summary from Goodreads.com:

An older woman growing flowers, a younger woman caught up in the weeds, and the seasons of life.

Twenty years ago, Anna Hott thought she could control everything – her crumbling marriage, her demanding children, her hectic life – by quitting her high-paced job in New York City and moving her family to tranquil Sanibel Island, Florida. But she brought her untamed emotions, her rage toward her cheating husband, and her yearning to write a novel with her. When her husband and children left the house for a week, Anna thought at last she would get her household, her novel, and her mind in order. Instead, her elderly neighbor Fedelina Aurelio knocked on her door bearing flowers and homespun wisdom, and when Fedelina’s recently divorced son arrived, Anna had a test of passions and a test of truth. Now, at 56 with an empty nest, Anna Holt pulls out the incomplete manuscript she started that memorable week and – to find closure for her life and a conclusion for her novel – travels to Indiana to visit Fedelina who lives in a nursing home.

A novel framed within a novel, Sand in My Eyes is both a story about the tension between motherhood and personal dreams as well as a story about women across generations inspiring one another to let beauty persist despite ugly circumstances.

My Review:

This book wasn't really for me because I think I'm not the target audience. I'm not a mother and I'm not in the stages of life that these women were in. I think if I were, maybe I would have gotten more out of this book. The tone of the book was too melancholy for me. I understand that being a mom and a wife are something you work at, but this book paints too depressing a picture.

The end was shocking and I liked the new twist, one that you wouldn't normally see. I definitely didn't see it coming. I also enjoyed the small amount of romance with Liam. I also liked the friendship between the two women and the mentorship of Fedelina to Anna. This part of the novel was more inspiring than Anna's family life.

The writing was good and I think the book could be appreciated more by a different audience.

Main Characters: 2/5
Supporting Characters: 3/5

Setting: 3/5

Romance: 2/5

Uniqueness: 3/5
Cover: 2/5
Writing: 3/5

Bottom Line: I went into it expecting a beach read, but the sad and melancholy tone wasn't for me.

Giveaway and Review: "Tempted by a Warrior"

As part of the "Tempted by a Warrior" blog tour, I have my review and a giveaway of 5 copies of the book, sponsored by Hachette!

"Tempted by a Warrior"
by Amanda Scott

Source: provided for review by Hachette Books

My Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

My Review:

Lady Fiona Jardine was married to the heir to the Jardine lands, Will, and also carried his child. The only trouble was that her husband was missing and many suspected her of killing him. The Old Jardine laird was ill, so he called upon the Laird of Kirkhill to be trustee of both Fiona and the baby if Will does turn out to be dead. Kirkhill quickly learned that Fiona wouldn't be easy to tame.

This book just wasn't for me, but maybe Amanda Scott fans and fans of a more old fashioned kind of romance will like it. I like my historical romances to have more of a modern mentality with the interactions between the hero and heroine. I feel like this one was too old-fashioned in it's traditional gender roles.

Fiona was only 17 and she really came across as both pitiful and also irritating. She was so very broken at the beginning, pregnant by an abusive husband with bruises and injuries to show it. Also, it seemed like she did a lot of jumping around for attention, but no one really paid her any.

Kirkhill was dull and didn't have much personality to speak of. I would rather see well developed characters than a murder mystery plot. I'm sure Scott fans will like this story, especially fans of a lot of great description of the Scottish landscape and well-researched Scottish dialect.

I would have just passed this one off as an okay read but something really bothered me. First of all, poor Fiona was abused by her first husband. Then, Kirkhill was shocked when she was terrified of him when he spanked her like a naughty child and then when he shook her another time he got angry. Then, in classic abuser fashion, Kirkhill tells her not to worry that he'd never hurt her. This turned me off in a big way.

I really liked Flory, Fiona's maid. There were definitely parts of the story when I was cheering for her "You go girl!" She had the type of forward-thinking modern mentality that I personally prefer for historical heroines to have.

Main Characters: 3/5
Supporting Characters: 4/5 (yay Flory!)

Setting: 3/5

Romance: 2/5

Uniqueness:3/5
Cover: 3/5
Writing: 3/5

Bottom Line:The romance moved slow for me and seemed to take a backseat to the rest of the action. This book would be best for fans of Scott and Scottish highland romances.

"Revolution"

by Jennifer Donnelly
Delacorte Books for Young Readers
Release Date: Oct 12, 2010

The following description is from Goodreads.com

BROOKLYN: Andi Alpers is on the edge. She’s angry at her father for leaving, angry at her mother for not being able to cope, and heartbroken by the loss of her younger brother, Truman. Rage and grief are destroying her. And she’s about to be expelled from Brooklyn Heights’ most prestigious private school when her father intervenes. Now Andi must accompany him to Paris for winter break. PARIS: Alexandrine Paradis lived over two centuries ago. She dreamed of making her mark on the Paris stage, but a fateful encounter with a doomed prince of France cast her in a tragic role she didn’t want—and couldn’t escape. Two girls, two centuries apart. One never knowing the other. But when Andi finds Alexandrine’s diary, she recognizes something in her words and is moved to the point of obsession. There’s comfort and distraction for Andi in the journal’s antique pages—until, on a midnight journey through the catacombs of Paris, Alexandrine’s words transcend paper and time, and the past becomes suddenly, terrifyingly present. Jennifer Donnelly, author of the award-winning novel A Northern Light, artfully weaves two girls’ stories into one unforgettable account of life, loss, and enduring love. Revolution spans centuries and vividly depicts the eternal struggles of the human heart.

Sounds like another great story from a great author!! I have Northern Light on my shelf already waiting to be read.

"Tuesday Tells It Slant" Review

"Tuesday Tells It Slant"
by Holly Christine

Source: sent for review by BlogSparksPR and the author

My Rating: 2 out of 5 stars

Book Summary from Goodreads.com:

Tuesday Morning has always been a little different. She's kept a diary since 1989 and while researching for her English Lit thesis in 2003 on Emily Dickinson's transcendental tendencies, finds a poem that will change her life. Haunted by a past that she considers less than desirable, Tuesday recreates her history with the stroke of a pen. Page by page, year by year, she rewrites her painful memories as she has always fantasized. Bullied and discontented with her body before, she now becomes popular, thin and desired. Throughout this cleansing process, she consciously decides what to keep and what to toss. She scans her old diary entries for words that trigger painful and unpleasant thoughts: Fat Tuesday (her nickname in high school), Katie (her childhood neighbor turned bully), Writer (her dream of becoming) and Monday (her identical twin sister). Tuesday finds herself in an odd place six years later, unknowingly spending each day of her life as someone that she was never meant to become. With each breath of her new life, Tuesday obliviously loses more of herself. When a special person of her past returns to her present, Tuesday is forced to choose between the life that she had once desired and her true self. We all have deep secrets and skeletons in our closets. Imagine having the ability to not only change the past, but also completely alter the present and future. How far will Tuesday go to erase her past? And how much of herself will she lose in the process?

My Review:

I don't think I "got" this book. There was so much flipping back and forth in time, it was really difficult to keep up with what time period I was reading about. I like to read to relax, and I was stressed out while reading this, trying to keep track of what year I was reading about. There are multiple years and ages that the story is told from, Tuesday and her twin Monday as a child, a middle school-er, a teen, and adult. There are many years to keep track of, including 1988, 1990, 1996, 2000, and 2009 to name a few. Sigh. I really enjoyed the first part of the story but then I got lost somewhere along the way.

The ending was a shocker, so that it made it interesting, but I would have gotten a lot more out of it if I had understood the middle of the story a little better. There was definitely an aura of melancholy about the book, and I usually don't read sad books, so that could be another reason why I didn't enjoy this one.

I appreciated the fact that the author was trying to tell a really unique story with an equally unique writing format. I'm all for testing the boundaries, and I hope others enjoy this book and get a lot out of it.

Main Characters: 2/5
Supporting Characters: 3/5

Setting: 2/5

Romance: 2/5

Uniqueness: 5/5 (It's definitely unique!!!!)
Cover: 2/5
Writing: 3/5

Bottom Line:I just feel like there was too much to keep up with to make this an enjoyable read for me.

5 copies of Eileen Dreyer's "Barely a Lady"!!

Giveaway and Review: "Barely a Lady"

As part of the "Barely a Lady" blog tour, I have my review and a giveaway of 5 copies of the book, sponsored by Hachette!

"Barely a Lady"
by Eileen Dreyer

Source: provided for review by Hachette Books

My Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

My Review:

Five years ago, jack Wyndham, Earl of Gracechurch, kicked out his wife, Olivia, over a misunderstanding instigated by his jealous cousin Gervaise. Olivia changed her last name to Grace after the scandalous divorce and lived trying to forget her love for Jack, while trying to hide from the malicious Gervaise. She is among a group of women tending soldiers injured in Waterloo, when she comes face to face with a near-death Jack, wearing a French uniform. Even after all he's done to hurt her, she takes it upon herself to nurse him back to health. As he comes to, she realizes Jack has amnesia and believes them to still be married.

I have mixed feelings about this book. I have some problems with the story, but Dreyer's writing style is addictive! I was turning the pages as quickly as possible, and there was never a slow moment.

I was reminded a little of Sherri Thomas and Meredith Duran's writing, in that the leads are very flawed and have dealt with a lot over long periods of time. Add in a war, and you've got a really sweeping tale of love and hardship.

Sigh, I wanted to like Jack, I really did. He just seemed so...likeable. I was ready to forgive him for the divorce, but then he started to remember his affair with Mimi. I don't know what is worse, reading about the hero telling another woman that he loves her or reading his love scenes with her. Jack didn't have to be a monk while they were divorced, but the Mimi affair was too much for me. Poor Olivia, already having to deal with so much on her own, and then she has to deal with Mimi.

I did enjoy all of the supporting characters, especially Grace and Diccan. I really looked forward to their scenes.

I liked the style of the book, with all the past secrets being revealed slowly throughout the book. There was a lot going on, and it was a bit like a mystery unraveling. I also liked that the characters were re-united after a long time apart. I just would rather not have to be so upset with the hero for most of the book!

Main Characters: 3/5
Supporting Characters: 4/5

Setting: 3/5

Romance: 3/5 (I liked the romance, I was just so upset with Jack!!)

Uniqueness: 4/5
Cover: 5/5 (I LOVE this cover!!)
Writing: 4/5

Bottom Line: I do think I'll read the other books in the series because I really liked the author's style, even though I had problems with the story itself.

"Fallen" Review

"Fallen"
by Lauren Kate

Source: bought

My Rating: 3 out of 5 stars

My Review:

Lucinda is sent to a special boarding school after something terrible happened to a boy last seen with her. Luce feels like an outsider at this very strange school for troubled teens. She immediately falls head over heels for Daniel, in spite of him flipping her off before they even meet. Another boy, Cam, seems too good to be true, showering Luce with attention and even gifts. With her new friend, Penn, Luce discovers the secrets that both Daniel and Cam are hiding from her.

This book was a little disappointing for me, because I've read such exciting reviews, but I found it to be slow and not very original. Pretty quickly, I felt like the story was a "Twilight" clone. Even the book binding itself felt like the "Twilight" hardcovers. "Normal" girl, lacking much personality at all, in the middle of a supernatural love triangle-sound familiar?

Daniel was terribly mean to her at the beginning, but Luce likes him anyway because he's so hot. She really has no other basis for how she feels about him. I would have loved to have seen some flashbacks so I would know why they loved each other so much.

There are some reasons why this book might appeal to a lot of readers. There is a lot of making out, and the scenes are probably something that could even be swoonworthy if I had liked the characters. Also, there is a lot of violence that seems to be thrown in for shock value. The action and story do pick up in the last 100 or so pages. Too bad the other 350 pages are so slow.

I actually liked Gabbe a lot! She was a really strong, kick butt female character! Penn was a cute character too, she seemed the most "real" of all of the characters.

Main Characters: 2/5
Supporting Characters: 3/5

Setting: 3/5

Romance: 2/5

Uniqueness: 2/5
Cover: 3/5 (gorgeous!!! But not really like the book. The pic is so romanticized, the book is gritty, and Luce's hair is long, but it is short in the book)
Writing: 3/5

Bottom Line:This book fell short for me, it seemed like it was trying too hard to fit into the "Twilight" craze instead of being new and original.
